The Ugly "P" Word

Miracles happen after all! Your husband called from work and volunteered to take the kids out for pizza, video games, and a movie! They could be gone all evening, and you will finally have some all-important time for yourself!

Ideas start running through your head… you could make your special blend of coffee, light your candles, put on your relaxing CD, and break in your new journal!

But wait - you absolutely must bathe and dress kids for their night out, do the dishes from lunch, clean off the table so you have comfortable space to write in your journal, and oh – you absolutely must prepare your family’s clothes for the afternoon wedding tomorrow.

There goes your wonderful evening all to yourself. Now you have to clean, do laundry, iron and maybe have a little leftover time and energy for doting on yourself.  UGH.

Procrastination

Truth be told, you could have had your magical evening alone if only you had cleaned off the table right after the mess was made, given your kids a bath on schedule, washed the dishes after lunch, and ironed your wedding clothes during your favorite daytime show – like you planned to do this morning. But what happened?!

You didn’t wake up this morning with the intention to sabotage yourself. But unknowingly, throughout the day, you really screwed yourself to the wall. If you had taken care of these small tasks as you originally planned, then you would be counting the seconds until your husband and kids walked out the door so you could enjoy an evening that most women would envy.

What does all this mean? You are a procrastinator. We all know what a dirty word that is, and most of us are embarrassed to admit that we carry the ugly “P” gene in our DNA. So, what can we do about it?!

Are You Simple or Tough?

A simple answer is to forget the couch is in the living room, or the computer is screaming your name and actually DO what needs to be done. But this is an answer we all know. We just don’t do it!

Here is the tough answer. Chances are, you are creating a diversion on the outside, to avoid something on the inside. And when you do that, you block all you could accomplish and become.

Your Solution

Now, pull out that journal, maybe grab your Tarot cards for inspiration, and answer these questions:

Why do you avoid mundane or everyday tasks?

What purpose could you assign these chores?  Ultimately, what does accomplishing these chores create in your life or for your family?

What purpose does leaving the chores for later accomplish?  Why do you allow chores to build up and busywork to consume your time?  What are you avoiding?

What is the avoidance doing to your spirit?

Choose three words that describe you right now.

Choose three words to describe how you would like to be.

What are three small changes you could make that would transform your from your "now" words into your "want to be" words?

Small steps will transform your life. You can do it!
