Easy Herbal Wine

Herbal wine is wonderful for quiet evenings alone or with friends. Herbal wine also lends itself to spiritual ceremonies and celebrations of life and love, filling you with its natural, healing properties.

Herbal wine can take weeks or months to make from scratch! However, there is a simpler way to make an herbal wine you will enjoy.

Simple Herbal Wine Recipe

Purchase a bottle of your favorite wine.

Choose the herbs you want for your wine.

Bruise the herbs in a large bowl, and pour the wine over the top of them.

Cover the bowl and leave at room temperature for 3 or 4 hours.

Strain the herbs from the wine, and pour the wine back in the bottle. Chill the bottle on ice, then enjoy it!

Keep in mind that herbal wines are best made with the flowers of plants. For example, dandelion and violet make wonderful wines if you use only the flower. Stems, leaves and roots tend to make your wine bitter.

Herbal Wines for Cooking

If you cook with wine, you can use the method described above to infuse your cooking wine. The only difference is that you may not want to strain the herbs. You could put the herbs directly into the bottle, and the wine's flavor will get stronger over time.

Some herbs that lend themselves to cooking wines are garlic, thyme, rosemary, and oregano.

There's only one precaution: If you use garlic cloves, make sure you store the wine in the refrigerator to guard against botulism.
